Flicking through the channels on Austar (not my subscription nor my tv, as I am sadly too poor for such luxuries) I noticed an advert on the W channel for season 2 of Damages. I never really followed the careers of Glenn Close or Ted Danson with any interest, but them tearing up the screen in season 1 made the show one of the most fun legal crime thrillers I have seen in an age.

Novel: Not Untrue and Not Unkind by Ed O’Loughlin

Even if I did not purchase this novel which appeared on the Booker Longlist because it was written by a guy who worked for local Fairfax papers The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne’s The Age, and if the back cover blurb and first chapter did not indicate that the main character had worked as a foreign correspondent on the Dark Continent, it would still be bleedingly obvious that this guy worked as a journalist.

Robert Benchley and TCM – why do you do this to me?
When I hear the opening refrain of the jingle “Come one, come all/ We’ll have a ball…”, I groan inwardly. First, the song is incredibly annoying – not as annoying as the voice that brays, “This week in Hollywood historrrreeeee!”, true, but naff none the less. Second, the One Reel Wonders shorts that TCM use as inter-film filler invariably feature Robert Benchley, least when I am watching.
